A KOKUBUNJI village grew around the local KOKUBUNJI Temple located in all provinces. The KOKUBUNJI were provincial temples set up by Emperor SHOMU in 737. The men's KOKUBUNJI were under the jurisdiction of TODAIJI, the women's under HOKKE-JI with ten AMA in each.
