He was the father of UNJI and UNJO. UNJO is the name of the Imperial Court. As much a title as a name, it probably was given by his sons who were granted their school and names after making sword for the Emperor GO-DAIGO-TENNO. KO-MOKUME HADA. KO-MIDARE BA. |
UNJO(1) KA-GEN (br: UNJI): UKAI Founder. First signed KUNITOMO. He and his brother, KUNIYOSHI made a sword for Emperor GO-DAIGO TENNO. For this, they were allowed their school, UKAN-SHO, named for their town; and Imperial reference in their names. UNJO "Life of Heaven" (Heaven=Emperor). They made TACHI, NAGAMAKI and some TANTO. In BIZEN style that is strongly influenced of YAMASHIRO style. Their contemporaries were OSAFUNE leader, KATAOCHI GUNOME HA KAGEMITSU, RAI KUNITOSHI, RAI school inheritor who traveled his style to OMI and SHIKKAKE NORINAGA. All have various attributes which may be seen in the work of UNJO. Standing and pronounced ITAME HADA has JI-UTSURI. KO-NIE KO-MIDARE CHOJI BA with ASHI. BOSHI continues the YAKIBA theme. Worked with his brother, KUNITOMO to produce a sword for Emperor GO-DAIGO, whereafter they were allowed their school and Imperial reference in their names. Their father was given UNJO, the same name as the Imperial Court, and KUNITOMO became UNJO "Life under Heaven." The UNJI dates are: SHO-WA 1312 to KEM-MU 1334. Made FUNBARI TORI-ZORI, KO-KISSAKI TACHI with raised SHINOGI (SHINOGI-TAKA) and wide SHINOGI-JI. NAGAMAKI, MU-SORI TANTO and very strong UnoKUBI TSUKURI TANTO. TANTO are few. MOKUME HADA may seem more pronounced than OSAFUNE style having the ITAME with MASAME running HADA. The JI seems vacant of NIE except as it forms small, easily seen ring-like shapes known as KUMOnoSHII "Threads of a Spider" and similarly shaped patches of whitish, SHIRAKE HADA that appear forced into place. Falls from the BOSHI in a quite CHU-SUGUHA where perhaps a few very small ASHI will begin to form. Quiet in the upper finds KO-NIE KO-MIDARE BA of KO-CHOJI with SAKA-ASHI and YO growing larger in the lower. GUNOME AND pointed GUNOME- CHOJI MIDARE BA where NIE-KUDZURE forms in the ASHI troughs. ASHI pushes in at angles such that small GUNOME or CHOJI figures seem to be drooping to the side or squeezed out to the right or to the left. Also, tightly defined NIOI SUGUHA. YAMASHIRO influence seems strong especially with the TORII feel to the SUGATA. An old record states he died in his mid-70s in KO-EI 1342.
