OMI - CHUDO RAI MITSUKANE School  ////////////////// TOTSU RAI is established as CHUDO RAI. MITSUKANE's travels.         //////////////////////
MITSUKANE SHO-WA (t: RAI KUNITOSHI): At first a student of BIZEN
OSAFUNE NAGAMITSU, he traveled to YAMASHIRO to study
with RAI KUNITOSHI. He and members of the RAI School
moved to TOTSU in OMI and were known as the TOTSU RAI.
It is said their work for the NEMOTO CHUDO Main Hall of
the TODAIJI sect in ENRYAKU-JI Temple on HIEIZAN
between YAMASHIRO and OMI earned them the moniker,
CHUDO RAI. Another story says CHUDO RAI derives from
RAI founder, KUNIYUKI working near the CHUDO-JI Temple
along the SUSAKA in KYOTO. RAI KUNITOSHI signatures on
OMI work spell it a contemporary theme:
RAI MINAMOTO KUNITOSHI OITE CHUDO SAKU

MITSUKANE: KO-ITAME HADA. Masterfully done JI-NIE and CHIKEI
in all areas of the blade. HOSO-SUGU resembling
RAI KUNIMITSU and the wide CHU-SUGUHA seen through the
work of the students of Three-characters RAI KUNITOSHI.
MITSUKANE SUGUHA may show HOTSURE. NIE is strong.
BOSHI are KO-MARU or O-MARU and KAERI falls.
MEI: While some are regular, it is noted that his MITSU will
seem somewhat raised on the left, while the KANE tilts
up on the right. As with all controversy regarding MEI,
the secret of a master is in the work.
Note: MITSUKANE known for SUGUHA, usually HOSO-SUGU,
          and thick blades.
    MEI: MITSUKANE

MIDARE-MITSUKANE

MEIBUTSU BUNKAZAI TANTO - "MIDARE-MITSUKANE"
       NAGASA: 9.8 SUN                        MOTO-HABA: 8 BU
         SORI: MU-SORI
       NAKAGO: 3.2 SUN

MITSUKANE was a RAI KUNITOSHI student and is famous for
his adherence to RAI KUNITOSHI style  SUGUHA. The
        KATAOCHI "Stooped-shoulders" GUNOME-MIDARE this TANTO
displays is in the OSAFUNE school style originated by
OSAFUNE KAGEMITSU. MITSUKANE first studied sword making
as a youth under KAGEMITSU's father, NAGAMITSU and
speculation has naturally followed placing this piece as
early, or made in reverence of his early roots. The name
MIDARE MITSUKANE defines it an unusual SUGUHA departure.
It is considered unique among his works. HIRA-TSUKURI,
MU-SORI TANTO has strongly placed HI walking \the MUNE.
MOKUME HADA has rather weak JI-NIE when compared with
other MITSUKANE, RAI-style examples. GUNOME leans softly
in different directions. Small KO-ASHI drop occasionally
while a few YO try puckering the mid. SUNAGASHI runs
quietly and fine KINSUJI drape delicate threads.INAZUMA
arcs through the URA lower. KO-MARU BOSHI resists the
sweep of HAKIKAKE brushing NIOI and NIE to the SAKI. UBU,
two MEKUGI-ANA NAKAGO has his two-character MEI where the
MITSU curtseys' right and the KANE back-bends' left.
OMI - RAI MITSUKANE School
YOSHIKANE(1) RYAKU-O (f: MITSUKANE): AWAZU JU smiths were called
the AWAZU RAI. Old FURISODE style TANTO. HOSO-SUGUHA
with TOGARI-ASHI. Small MEI on SUJIKAI YASURI.
    MEI: YOSHIKANE

YOSHIKANE(2) EI-WA (f: YOSHIKANE): Makes swords at TOTSU, the
scene of the OTSU Battle, ROKKAKU TAKAYORI's MEI-O 1492
loss and retreat from SHOGUN ASHIKAGA YOSHITANE's forces.
OTSU saw YOSHITANE defeated by YOSHIZUMI seven years
later; and NOBUNAGA built SAKAMOTO Castle there. ASHIKAGA
YOSHIHISA had died in OMI during his CHO-KYO SEIBATSU and
was replaced by YOSHITANE who met ROKKAKU TAKAYORI at
OTSU. The armaments support group for these ventures
transformed the RAI MITSUKANE sword style with BIZEN
influence for descendant, YOSHITSUGU, MEI-O 1492.
See YOSHITSUGU below. The TOTSU group of YOSHIKANE(2) and
fellows, MORICHIKA and group, is called the TOTSU RAI.

        KO-MOKUME. YOSHITSUGU shows KATSUMITSU's SUE-BIZEN style
GUNOME-CHOJI MIDARE BA with ASHI and YO, a style
patterned after BIZEN's famous O-EI roots. BIZEN style

TAKAYORI with SAKYOnoSHIN MUNEMITSU students. One was
KATSUMITSU of AKAMATSU MASANORI's HARIMA. SUKENAGA aided
